How To Quit Smoking With Vaping

So, you’re ready to make the switch to vaping? Wanting to put the cigarettes down for good? Vaping has been proven to be 95% safer than smoking through a study by Public Health England and has become the number 1 way to stop smoking, the hardest part is getting the right device, with the right liquids, simply follow this full beginner’s guide to vaping!

What is a Vape?

A vape, or electronic cigarette is exactly what it sounds like. It is designed as a means to distribute nicotine to your system in a safer manner whilst still maintaining the feeling of smoking. It is made up of multiple components such as a base or mod, tank and coils.

Device

The most important step is getting the correct kind of device, lots of people try to stop with the wrong setup and ultimately get frustrated when they’re still craving the cigs. At Touch of Vape we believe you have the very best chance at quitting smoking with what we call a Mouth to Lung (MTL) Device. The reason why is this kind of device is the most similar to a cigarette in terms of draw and feel, you’ll still get that tight pull as if you were smoking a cigarette. This kind of device produces small amounts of vapour similar to the smoke produce from a cigarette, so you won’t be chucking clouds like Thomas the tank engine.

To keep it simple, these kinds of devices allow you to use the higher strengths of nicotine (more on that later) and tend to be cheaper devices allowing you to start the journey without breaking the bank.

To put that all together we’re looking for a device that;

  • Is small and compact
  • Offers a Mouth to Lung draw (MTL)
  • Is less than £35

E-Liquids

Now we have got our device we’re going to need something to put in it, dive into the world of e-liquids. This is where it gets very personal and is down to you to find the correct flavour, whatever floats your boat!

In simple terms e-liquid is made up of two main base components, PG and VG. These components are mixed in different ratios to get very different products. If you’ve gone for one of the above products or a product that fits the description we gave, you’ll be looking for a 50/50 ratio e-liquid or even nicotine salts.

70/30 liquids won’t work in these style devices as the liquid is too thick, you’ll need much more power to vaporise these liquids using what we call a sub ohm device or (RL/RDL) device.

We’ve got full in-depth articles on both e-liquids and nicotine salts.

Strength of nicotine

This again, is a difficult aspect to suggest as it heavily depends on your smoking habits. Not all e-liquids contains nicotine but for most people looking to transition from cigarettes, it is very important.

We have two forms of nicotine available to us, Freebase Nicotine and Nicotine Salts.

Freebase is the standard choice for vapers as it provides a slow release of nicotine to the bloodstream and tends to give a notable throat hit in higher doses.

Nicotine Salts on the other hand get into our bloodstream much faster and kill the cravings faster whilst also offering a smoother sensation on the throat.

With that in mind we must decide if we want almost immediate nicotine satisfaction and whether we want that ‘kick’ at the back of the throat, if you’re going to try to stick to your normal smoking rituals and use your vape sparingly as you would a cigarette, use nicotine salts. If you’re more likely the type of person to constantly have your vape in your hand, freebase may be the way to go.

What Strength Nicotine Do I Need?

Coils and Pods

We’re nearly there! Now you have your device it’s important to keep on top of it and maintain it to get the most out of it. The powerhouse of the device is called the coil, you can think of it as a filter in a cigarette, this is the replaceable part of the vape.

You will have to change the coil every so often to give you the best experience, there’s many different factors that can affect the life of the coil but typically they will last anywhere from 7 days to 14 days. We have a full breakdown on coils here.

When you pop in a new coil it is important to prime it! What this means is to put a little e-liquid on each of the cotton pads visible, this will saturate the coil before it even goes in the vape, doing this will extend the life of the coil and stop you from burning it out almost immediately (you’ll know when it’s burnt out!).

A Little Encouragement

If you’ve made it to the bottom of this page, you’re well on your way to a smoke free lifestyle!

So, you’ve made the first step, good for you! It’s important to note that stopping smoking is a process. It isn’t an overnight thing.

It is completely normal to still want a cigarette after buying a vape and even more normal to smoke and vape at the same time, we say, if you’ve smoked 20 cigarettes today, aim for 15 tomorrow and use the vape in between. A lot of people beat themselves up because they’ve had a cigarette once they’ve committed to vaping and this shouldn’t be how it is, cut it down slowly.

I was smoking and vaping at the same time for about 6 months and now haven’t had a cigarette in 3 years, a little perseverance and you will get there.

This was a very basic guide into vaping for the first time, we have plenty of other guides on various topics in the vaping world, all of which you can find here.
