At first glance, vaping might seem like a naturally vegan activity. There are no obvious animal products involved in the way there are with food. However, a vaping product involves multiple components: the e-liquid itself, the device, the coil and its wicking material, and in some cases, the manufacturing and testing processes behind the product. Each of these can introduce non-vegan elements in ways that are not always obvious.
We are asked about this regularly in our Coventry store, not just by vegans but by people who are curious about what they are actually inhaling. It is a legitimate question and one that deserves a thorough answer.
Ingredient by ingredient
Are E-Liquid Ingredients Vegan?
A typical UK e-liquid contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavourings and in most cases nicotine. Here is the vegan status of each.
Propylene Glycol
PG base
PG used in e-liquids is synthetically produced and does not involve animal products in its manufacture. It is considered vegan by the vast majority of vegan standards. The only caveat is that PG, like many chemicals, may have been tested on animals at some point in its regulatory history, which some strict vegans consider relevant.
Vegetable Glycerin
VG base
Despite the name, VG is not always derived from vegetable sources. It can be produced from palm oil, soybean oil or coconut oil, all of which are vegan. However it can also be derived from animal fat, typically tallow. Most reputable UK e-liquid manufacturers use plant-derived VG specifically because the market demands it. It is always worth confirming the VG source directly with the manufacturer if this matters to you, as labelling does not always specify the origin.
Flavourings
Concentrate compounds
Flavouring concentrates used in e-liquids are generally synthetic or plant-derived. However some flavour compounds, particularly those replicating cream, honey or dairy profiles, can contain animal-derived ingredients. Manufacturers are required to disclose ingredients to the MHRA but this data is not always publicly accessible in a form that makes vegan verification simple. If you are vaping a cream or dessert flavour and veganism is important to you, it is worth contacting the manufacturer directly to confirm the ingredient sources.
Nicotine
Nicotine extract
Nicotine used in e-liquids is extracted from tobacco plants, making it plant-derived and vegan in its origin. Some vegans raise concerns about animal testing in nicotine research, a concern that applies to many pharmaceutical and chemical compounds. The nicotine itself however does not involve animal products in production.
Beyond the liquid
What About the Device Itself?
Vaping devices introduce a different set of considerations. The main materials involved are plastics, metals, glass and the cotton or other wicking material used in coils.

Device casing and components
The plastic, metal and glass components of a vaping device are manufactured from synthetic or mineral materials and do not involve animal products. The finishing materials used on some premium devices, such as leather wraps or certain coatings, are the exception. Check the product description if this is relevant to you.

Coil wicking material
The vast majority of vape coils use organic cotton as the wicking material. Cotton is plant-derived and vegan. Some specialist coils use rayon or mesh materials, which are also synthetic or plant-derived. Silk wicking has been used in some artisan coil builds but is uncommon in mainstream retail products.

Packaging and adhesives
Some vegans consider the glues, inks and packaging materials used in product packaging. These are largely synthetic but animal-derived binders or dyes are occasionally used in printing and packaging. This level of scrutiny goes beyond what most vegan standards require but some strict vegans do consider it.

Animal testing
This is the most significant grey area for vegans who apply a cruelty-free standard beyond just ingredients. Vaping products have been subject to safety testing that has at times involved animal studies, particularly in regulatory submissions. This is a consideration for strict vegans applying a cruelty-free standard rather than just an ingredient-based one.
Practical advice
How to Vape Confidently as a Vegan
For the majority of vegans, the practical answer is that most mainstream UK e-liquids from reputable manufacturers are effectively vegan. PG is synthetic, VG in most UK products is plant-derived, flavourings in standard fruit and mint profiles are typically synthetic and nicotine is plant-derived.
The areas that require additional attention are dessert and cream flavour profiles where animal-derived flavour compounds are more likely, and VG source confirmation for anyone applying a strict standard. Contacting manufacturers directly remains the most reliable way to verify this information.
