After years of helping Leicester customers switch from cigarettes to vaping, our team has heard the same regrets from first-time buyers over and over. Here is everything you wish someone had told you before you walked into a vape shop.
These are not opinions — they are the observations of a team that has helped hundreds of Leicester customers buy their first vape. The regrets and discoveries that come up most often in conversation. If you are about to buy your first vape, this is the briefing you should read before you step into any vape shop.
This is the most consequential first decision and the one most often got wrong. Too low a nicotine strength means you spend the first week craving cigarettes and probably go back to them, concluding that vaping does not work. Too high means nausea and dizziness that puts you off vaping entirely. The match between your previous cigarette consumption and your starting nicotine strength is not a preference — it is a functional requirement for a successful switch. As a guide: 20+ cigarettes a day means 18–20mg nicotine salt. Ten to fifteen: 10mg. Fewer than ten: 6mg or below. Tell us how much you smoked and we will tell you exactly what to start with.
Every new coil — whether in a pod device or a refillable tank — needs to be saturated with liquid before first use. This means adding a few drops of liquid directly onto the cotton wick visible inside the coil, filling the tank or pod, and then waiting five to ten minutes before the first draw. Vapers who skip this step fire a dry coil and immediately burn the cotton, producing a harsh burnt taste from the first puff. Many first-time buyers conclude that vaping always tastes burnt when the reality is they just needed to prime the coil. We show every first-time buyer how to do this before they leave our Leicester store.
Propylene glycol — one of the two base ingredients in e-liquid — draws moisture from the tissues it contacts, including your mouth and throat. Most new vapers do not increase their water intake when they switch and within a week they are dealing with a persistently dry mouth, headaches and a scratchy throat that they attribute to vaping when they are simply dehydrated. Aim for at least an extra half-litre to a full litre of water per day above your normal intake, and have water to hand during vaping sessions. The dry mouth and associated headache often clear up completely with this one change.
Every coil degrades over time. The cotton inside it darkens, the metal heating element oxidises and eventually the vapour produced is harsh, darker tasting and unmistakeably burnt. This is not a product fault — it is normal wear. Most coils last one to three weeks depending on use frequency and the sweetness of the liquids used (sweet liquids clog coils faster). When the taste changes and feels off, the coil needs replacing. Knowing this in advance means you do not return your device thinking it is broken when it just needs a new coil.
Pod devices and vape pens run on lithium batteries that degrade faster if regularly discharged completely. The best habit is to charge before the battery is flat — topping up from 30–40% rather than running to zero each time. Most modern devices have a USB-C or micro-USB port. Buying a second short charging cable to keep at your desk or in your car means you rarely end up with a flat device at the wrong moment. A flat device is often what drives new switchers back to a cigarette — have a charging plan from day one.
UK e-liquids sold by regulated retailers must be notified to the MHRA, cannot contain diacetyl or certain other banned compounds, and must meet nicotine concentration and labelling requirements. Unbranded liquids, grey market imports and products that do not display a UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) mark or have not been through TRPR notification may not meet these standards. Buying from a regulated UK retailer is not just about legality — it is about knowing that the product you are inhaling has met minimum safety standards.
"We tell every first-time buyer the same things. Prime your coil. Start at the right nicotine strength for you specifically. Drink more water. These three things alone account for most of the bad first experiences people have with vaping."
