Switching from cigarettes to vaping is the single most impactful health improvement most smokers can make. This guide covers everything a Leicester smoker needs to know to make the switch correctly, from choosing the right first device to managing the first few weeks.
Public Health England has consistently maintained that vaping is approximately 95% less harmful than smoking. The NHS actively recommends vaping as the most effective consumer product for smoking cessation. The primary reason the harm reduction is so significant is simple: vaping removes combustion. Tobacco smoke contains over 70 confirmed carcinogens produced by burning, carbon monoxide, tar, benzene, formaldehyde and dozens more. Vaping heats rather than burns and produces none of these combustion products. For Leicester smokers thinking about making the switch, the case is clear and well-evidenced.
"Most of the customers we see at our Leicester store have one thing in common when they come in, they are surprised by how quickly they feel better after switching. Better breathing, more energy, improved sense of smell. It starts within days."
Touch of Vape team, LeicesterThe most common reason switching attempts fail is starting with the wrong nicotine strength. Too low and you experience nicotine withdrawal, irritability, cravings, difficulty concentrating, that makes you reach for a cigarette within days. Too high and you feel nauseous and dizzy, which makes you associate vaping with feeling unwell. As a general starting guide: if you smoked 20 or more cigarettes a day, start with 18–20mg nicotine salt. Ten to fifteen a day: 10–12mg. Fewer than ten: 6–10mg. These are starting points, you can adjust once you have established a baseline that satisfies your cravings.
For Leicester smokers making their first switch, we recommend a mouth-to-lung (MTL) pod or pen device rather than a sub-ohm kit. MTL devices replicate the draw of a cigarette, a restricted inhale that goes to the mouth before the lungs, which feels familiar and satisfying to former cigarette smokers. Sub-ohm devices produce large clouds with direct lung inhales and are better suited to experienced vapers stepping up their setup. Starting with a device that feels similar to smoking dramatically improves the chances of the switch sticking.
Nicotine salt liquids deliver nicotine faster and more smoothly than standard freebase nicotine at equivalent concentrations. For new switchers, particularly those who were heavy smokers, nicotine salts at 18–20mg provide a nicotine delivery speed that is much closer to a cigarette than freebase nicotine at equivalent strength. This speed of delivery is one of the key reasons modern nic salt pod devices are significantly more effective for cessation than earlier vaping products were.
The first two to four weeks of switching are an adjustment period. You may experience a cough as the airways clear accumulated mucus from tobacco smoke, this is positive and settles within two to four weeks for most people. Taste and smell often improve noticeably within the first week. Some people experience mild headache or dry mouth initially as the body adjusts to PG in the liquid, drinking significantly more water helps. Most people who persist through the first two weeks find the switch becomes natural and comfortable.
Switching to vaping is step one. The goal, for both your health and your wallet, is progressively reducing nicotine concentration over time until you reach zero. Having this plan in mind from the start gives the switch a purpose and direction beyond simply swapping one habit for another.
As described above, 18–20mg for heavy smokers, stepping down when each level feels comfortable. Don't rush the step-down.
Move to the next lower strength when your current level feels genuinely normal and comfortable, not because a calendar says to. Most people stay at each level for four to eight weeks.
As you step down, also try extending the time between vaping sessions. Reducing both concentration and frequency accelerates total nicotine reduction.
Free behavioural support from NHS services combined with vaping produces significantly higher quit rates than either alone. Contact your GP or visit the NHS website to access Leicester-based services.
