Why Does a New Coil Taste Burnt?

The cotton wick was not saturated with liquid before the coil was fired

Dry cotton burns immediately when the heating element activates

A brand new coil contains a cotton wick that needs to be fully saturated with e-liquid before the heating element is activated. If the coil is fired before the cotton is wet, which happens when a new coil is installed and immediately vaped without the priming process, the dry cotton burns on the first draw. Burnt cotton produces a harsh, acrid taste that does not go away. The cotton is permanently damaged and the coil needs replacing. This is called a dry hit and it is the single most preventable cause of coil problems.

How to prevent it

How to Prevent a Burnt New Coil: Every Time

1

Add drops directly to the wicking ports

Before installing the coil, add two to three drops of liquid to each wicking port. Watch the cotton darken as it absorbs the liquid.

2

Install and fill

Fit the coil into the tank or device. Fill the tank to the maximum fill line.

3

Wait ten minutes

Set the device down and do not use it for at least five to ten minutes. This allows the liquid to soak fully into the cotton from the tank side.

4

Prime draws without firing

Take two to three slow draws on the device without pressing the fire button. This pulls liquid into the coil through capillary action.

5

Vape at lower wattage first

If your device has adjustable power, start at the lower end of the coil's recommended range for the first few sessions.

"A new coil tasting burnt is almost always a priming issue. The instructions say to let it sit before use and almost nobody reads them. Five minutes prevents a ruined coil every time."

Common Questions About Burnt New Coils

01

Can I fix a burnt new coil?

No. Once the cotton has burned, the damage is permanent. The coil needs replacing and the replacement needs to be primed correctly.

02

My coil worked fine before this one

Each new coil needs priming individually. A coil that works does not make the next one immune from burning if it is not primed.

03

My device has a pod with a built-in coil

Pre-built pods work the same way. Fill the pod, let it sit ten minutes, take primer draws before vaping.

04

I only used the coil for one day

Coils can burn on the very first draw if they are not primed. Duration of use is not the relevant variable, saturation before first use is.
