Yes — vaping can cause headaches and it does so through several well-understood mechanisms. The good news is that all of the main causes are identifiable and fixable. Here is a clear guide to working out which cause applies to you.
Vaping can cause headaches through several mechanisms: too much nicotine elevating blood pressure and triggering vascular headache; dehydration from propylene glycol causing tension-type headache; a burnt or degraded coil producing harsh vapour; and in new vapers, an adjustment period as the body adapts to nicotine or a change in intake level. Identifying which mechanism applies to you is straightforward and all of them have practical solutions.
Nicotine raises blood pressure and heart rate through its stimulant effect on the cardiovascular system. In higher doses it constricts blood vessels throughout the body including the cerebral vasculature. Both the blood pressure elevation and the cerebral vasoconstriction can trigger headaches, particularly at the temples or across the forehead. This type of headache typically occurs shortly after vaping and may be accompanied by a slight buzz, dizziness or nausea — the cluster of symptoms associated with mild nicotine excess. It is most common in new vapers using 20mg nicotine salts, in vapers who have increased their nicotine strength, or in vapers who have been chain vaping without realising the cumulative dose. Stepping down nicotine strength or reducing frequency resolves it.
Propylene glycol's hygroscopic nature draws moisture from tissues including those in the mouth, throat and respiratory tract. Systemic mild dehydration is a very common cause of tension headache — the dull, squeezing sensation felt around the forehead and temples. Vapers who do not compensate for PG-induced fluid loss by drinking more water are particularly susceptible. If a large glass of water relieves your vaping-related headache within fifteen to twenty minutes, dehydration is almost certainly the cause. The fix is simple: drink more water throughout the day.
A coil at the end of its life or improperly primed delivers burnt, acrid vapour that contains different compound profiles than clean vapour. Inhaling this repeatedly can irritate the throat and sinuses and trigger headache, nausea and general discomfort. The taste is a reliable indicator — if your vape tastes burnt, the coil needs replacing. Replacing it and priming it properly before use will resolve this cause immediately.
New switchers from cigarettes to vaping sometimes experience headaches in the first week or two that they attribute to vaping. In many cases these are actually nicotine regulation headaches as the body adjusts to a different nicotine delivery speed, or they are related to stopping the specific combustion products of cigarettes rather than the vaping itself. These adjustment headaches typically resolve within one to two weeks without any change to the vaping setup.
"Nine times out of ten when a customer says vaping gives them headaches, it is one of two things: too much nicotine or not enough water. Both are very easy to fix."
Touch of Vape team, CoventryDoes the headache come on shortly after vaping, especially after several puffs in a row? Does it come with a slight buzz or dizziness? If yes, reduce your nicotine strength or vape less frequently and see if it resolves.
Does the headache feel like a dull tension across your forehead or temples? Does it improve quickly when you drink a large glass of water? If yes, make a habit of drinking a glass of water after each vaping session.
Does your vape taste burnt, harsh or noticeably different from when the coil was new? Replace the coil, prime it, and wait five minutes before using it. If the headache stops, the coil was the issue.
Have you recently switched from cigarettes and been vaping for less than two weeks? Adjustment headaches in this period are common and typically resolve on their own. If they persist beyond two weeks or are severe, investigate the other causes.
