The short answer

Does Vaping Cause Bloating?

Yes — through two main mechanisms

Swallowed air and nicotine's effect on digestion both contribute

Vaping can cause bloating through two distinct mechanisms. The first is aerophagia — swallowing air during the act of vaping — which introduces air into the digestive system in a way that causes distension and discomfort. The second is nicotine's stimulant effect on the gastrointestinal tract, which can alter gut motility and gas production in ways that contribute to bloating. Both mechanisms have practical solutions.

This is not medical advice. Persistent bloating or significant abdominal discomfort should be assessed by a GP. Bloating has many causes and a pattern of symptoms that does not resolve with the interventions described here warrants professional assessment.
The two causes

Why Vaping Can Cause Bloating

SWALLOWED AIR

Aerophagia From Incorrect Vaping Technique

Aerophagia is the technical term for swallowing air. It is one of the most common causes of bloating generally and it is particularly relevant to new vapers who have not yet developed a consistent inhalation technique. When drawing on a vape device, some people inadvertently swallow air alongside the vapour, particularly if they are using a mouth-to-lung device and not fully directing the vapour to the lungs before swallowing. This swallowed air travels to the stomach and intestines, causing the distension and gurgling associated with bloating. The fix is technique rather than changing the device or liquid.

NICOTINE GUT

Nicotine and Gut Motility Changes

Nicotine acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the enteric nervous system — the network of neurons governing the gut. It stimulates smooth muscle contraction throughout the gastrointestinal tract, altering the normal rhythm of gut motility. This stimulation can disrupt the coordinated movement that normally prevents gas accumulation, leading to increased gas production and trapping in the small and large intestine. The result is the bloated, uncomfortable feeling that some vapers experience, particularly those who use higher nicotine concentrations or vape frequently.

DEHY DRATION

Dehydration and Digestive Function

Adequate hydration is important for normal digestive function. PG's dehydrating effect can reduce the fluid available for normal intestinal processing, potentially contributing to slower digestion and increased gas production in some individuals. This is a secondary mechanism compared to aerophagia and nicotine's direct GI effects but it contributes to the overall picture.

"Bloating from vaping is almost always either a technique issue or a nicotine strength issue. Sometimes it is both. Fixing the inhale technique and dropping the nicotine strength by one step usually solves it within a week."

How to Reduce Bloating From Vaping

01

Work on your inhaling technique

The goal is to draw vapour into the mouth without simultaneously swallowing air. For mouth-to-lung devices, pull the vapour to the mouth, close the back of the throat briefly, then inhale to the lungs before exhaling. Not swallowing during or immediately after the draw reduces the air that enters the digestive system.

02

Reduce nicotine strength

If your bloating correlates with vaping sessions rather than specific technique issues, reducing nicotine concentration reduces the GI stimulant effect. Dropping from 20mg to 10mg is often sufficient to noticeably reduce digestive discomfort including bloating.

03

Slow down between puffs

Taking fewer, more spaced puffs reduces the cumulative gut stimulant effect of nicotine intake and also reduces the likelihood of inadvertently swallowing air through frequent repeated draws.

04

Stay hydrated

Drinking water alongside vaping supports normal digestive function and may offset some of the dehydration-related contribution to digestive discomfort.
