The short answer

Can Vaping Make You Gain Weight?

Current evidence

Not directly — but reducing nicotine can contribute to weight gain

Vaping itself does not cause weight gain in the way that eating excess calories does. Vapour contains no meaningful calories and inhaling it does not directly affect your metabolism in a way that promotes fat storage. However nicotine suppresses appetite and slightly raises metabolic rate. As you reduce your nicotine intake through vaping, or switch to nicotine-free options, these appetite-suppressing effects diminish and you may find yourself eating more and gaining weight as a result. This is the same mechanism behind weight gain after quitting smoking.

How nicotine affects weight

The Role Nicotine Plays in Appetite and Metabolism

Nicotine has several well-documented effects on body weight regulation. Understanding them helps explain why weight changes during the switching or stepping-down process are so common.

APPETITE

Nicotine Directly Suppresses Appetite

Nicotine acts on receptors in the hypothalamus, the brain region that regulates hunger and satiety. It reduces appetite signals and can delay the feeling of hunger after eating. This effect is not subtle: research on smokers and weight consistently shows that nicotine users tend to weigh less on average than non-users, partly attributed to this appetite suppression. When nicotine is reduced or removed, appetite returns to its natural level, which can feel like a sudden increase in hunger to someone whose eating habits were previously shaped by nicotine's influence.

METABOL

Nicotine and Metabolic Rate

Nicotine acts as a mild stimulant that slightly raises the resting metabolic rate. This means the body burns marginally more calories at rest when nicotine is present. The effect is not large enough to have a significant impact on its own but combined with appetite suppression it contributes to the lower average body weight seen in regular nicotine users. When nicotine intake is reduced, this mild metabolic boost diminishes.

DOPAMINE

Dopamine and Food Cravings

Nicotine stimulates dopamine release in the brain's reward pathway. When nicotine is removed or reduced, the brain seeks dopamine from other sources. Food, particularly sweet and high-fat foods, is a common substitute. Vapers stepping down their nicotine concentration may notice increased cravings for snacks or sweet foods, which is a dopamine-driven response rather than genuine hunger. This mechanism is well established in smoking cessation research.

FLAVOUR

Sweet Flavours and Eating Behaviour

Some research has suggested that sweet-flavoured e-liquids may stimulate appetite or cue eating behaviour in some individuals, though the evidence for this is not conclusive. Sweet flavour cues are associated with anticipation of caloric intake and may prompt food seeking. This is a weaker proposed mechanism than the nicotine-related ones but it is occasionally mentioned in the context of vaping and weight.

"Weight gain when stepping down nicotine is one of the most common concerns we hear from customers. Understanding why it happens is the first step to managing it."

What This Means at Different Stages of Your Vaping Journey

01

Switching from cigarettes to vaping

If you switch from cigarettes to vaping at an equivalent nicotine strength, the weight-related effects of nicotine remain largely unchanged. Most recent switchers do not experience significant weight gain because nicotine intake is maintained. Vaping is a more effective strategy for avoiding the weight gain typically associated with quitting smoking cold turkey.

02

Stepping down nicotine strength

As you reduce from 20mg to 10mg to 6mg and lower, appetite suppression gradually diminishes and metabolic rate may drop slightly. Weight gain at this stage is common and expected. Managing it through diet and exercise is more effective than halting the step-down process.

03

Moving to nicotine-free vaping

At zero nicotine, appetite returns fully to its natural state. The weight gain risk at this point is comparable to quitting smoking entirely. Research suggests an average weight gain of 4 to 5 kilograms is common after quitting nicotine, though this varies considerably between individuals.

04

Long-term vaping at stable nicotine

Vapers who maintain a stable nicotine intake over the long term are unlikely to experience significant weight changes attributable to vaping. The effects described above are most pronounced during transitions in nicotine intake rather than at steady state.
