What Is Sub-Ohm Vaping?

Vaping with coils that have a resistance below 1.0 ohm

Lower resistance means higher power and larger vapour production

Sub-ohm vaping refers to using coils with an electrical resistance below 1.0 ohm. Lower resistance means the coil draws more power from the battery, heats up faster, produces more vapour and delivers a warmer, more intense vaping experience. Sub-ohm devices use direct-to-lung inhalation, vapour goes straight to the lungs in one motion, producing large clouds. They are typically used with low-strength freebase nicotine liquids (3mg or 6mg) at 70% VG or higher, and are not suitable for nicotine salt liquids at 10mg or 20mg.

Sub-ohm vs standard vaping

How Sub-Ohm Differs From Standard MTL Vaping

RESISTANCE

Coil Resistance: the Defining Characteristic

Standard MTL coils typically have a resistance between 1.0 and 3.0 ohms. Sub-ohm coils are below 1.0 ohm, often 0.2 to 0.8 ohm. The lower resistance means higher current, higher power and significantly more vapour production. Sub-ohm devices operate at wattages of 40W and above, compared to 8W to 20W for typical pod and pen devices.

VAPOUR PRODUCTION

Vapour Clouds: Significantly Larger

The primary appeal of sub-ohm vaping for many enthusiasts is the large, dense vapour clouds it produces. Higher power and lower resistance means more liquid is vaporised per puff, producing the large exhale plumes associated with experienced vapours. Cloud production is not relevant to harm reduction or nicotine delivery efficiency, it is an aesthetic preference.

NICOTINE FORMAT

Why Sub-Ohm Uses Freebase at Low Strength

Sub-ohm devices produce so much vapour per puff that using high-strength nic salt liquids would deliver a massive and potentially dangerous nicotine dose per inhalation. Sub-ohm vaping requires low-strength freebase nicotine, 3mg or 6mg, to compensate for the high vapour volume. The total nicotine per puff can still be comparable to a pod device at 20mg nic salt, just delivered in a larger vapour volume at a lower concentration.

WHO IT SUITS

Who Sub-Ohm Vaping Is For

Sub-ohm vaping is not a beginner format. It requires understanding of coil resistance, wattage settings, liquid compatibility and DTL inhalation technique. It suits experienced vapers who enjoy the cloud production and warm, intense flavour hit, or those who find standard pod vaping too low-power. It is not the recommended starting point for smokers switching to vaping for the first time.

Bar Drop Nicotine Salts

Bar Drop Nic Salts: for MTL Pod Devices, Not Sub-Ohm

Bar Drop is a nicotine salt product designed for MTL pod and pen devices. For sub-ohm devices, use a low-strength freebase liquid instead.
