A vape is an electronic device that heats a liquid, called e-liquid or vape juice, to create a vapour that you inhale. There is no burning tobacco, no ash and no traditional smoke. Instead, a small metal coil warms the liquid until it turns into a fine mist that feels a bit like smoke when you breathe it in.
The main aim of modern vapes is to deliver nicotine, or just flavour if you prefer, in a way that avoids lighting a cigarette. For many adults who already smoke, vapes can provide a similar hand-to-mouth routine and sensation. For others, they are simply a way to enjoy flavoured vapour without nicotine at all.
Not all vapes are the same. There are very simple disposable vapes that you use and recycle when they run out, sleek pod systems that click together with prefilled pods, and more advanced refillable kits that let you choose your own coils, liquids and power settings. At Touch of Vape, we meet people in our UK shops and online who are at every stage, from complete beginners to hobbyists, so this guide is written in plain language for adults who just want vaping explained clearly.
Most vapes, whatever the size or style, share the same basic parts. There is a battery, usually a rechargeable one built into the device. Then there is a tank or pod, which holds the e-liquid. Inside that sits a coil, which is a small metal heating element wrapped in wicking material such as cotton. Finally, there is the e-liquid itself, which soaks into the coil.
When you puff on the mouthpiece, or press a button depending on the device, the battery sends power to the coil. The coil heats up and warms the e-liquid in the wick. As the liquid reaches the right temperature, it turns into vapour, which you inhale and exhale just like you would with smoke from a cigarette, although it behaves differently in the air.
There are two main styles of vaping. Mouth-to-lung (often called MTL) is where you draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it into your lungs, similar to the way most people smoke cigarettes. Direct-to-lung (DTL) is where you inhale straight into your lungs in one smooth breath, usually with bigger clouds of vapour. Most beginners, especially those switching from smoking, find MTL vapes feel more natural and satisfying at first.
Because there is no combustion, the vapour does not have the same lingering smell as cigarette smoke, and it does not leave yellow stains on walls and fabrics in the same way. That does not mean there is no smell at all, especially with flavoured liquids, but it tends to be lighter and disappears more quickly.
In UK vape shops and supermarkets, you will usually come across a few main categories of vapes.
• Disposable vapes: These come prefilled with e-liquid and a built-in battery. You use them until they stop producing vapour, then recycle them. They are very simple, with no buttons or refilling, but they create more waste and can work out more expensive over time. These devices have sinced been banned in the UK and have been replaced by Pre-Filled Vape Kits or Dispod Kits.
• Prefilled pod kits: These have a rechargeable battery and separate pods that already contain e-liquid. When a pod is empty, you replace it with a new one. They are easy to use and tidier than disposables, but you are limited to the flavours and strengths made for that system.
• Refillable pod kits: Similar idea, but the pods are empty, so you fill them with bottled e-liquid. This usually brings the running cost down and gives you a much bigger choice of flavours and nicotine strengths, while still keeping things compact and simple.
• Traditional vape kits with tanks: These have a battery or a separate mod and a tank that you fill yourself. You change the coils when they are worn out. They offer more control over airflow and power, and can be tailored for either MTL or DTL vaping.
For complete beginners, especially anyone used to smoking, a disposable or a straight forward MTL pod kit is often the easiest first step. Refillable pod kits and simple tank kits are good for people who want better value and more choice once they feel confident handling e-liquid. There are also rebuildable or advanced kits where you build your own coils, but we usually do not recommend those as a starting point, since they require more knowledge and maintenance.
E-liquid is a mixture of a few core ingredients. The base is usually a blend of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG). PG is thinner and carries flavour well, while VG is thicker and helps create more vapour. Flavourings are added to give the taste, and nicotine is included if you choose a nicotine liquid.
There are two main types of nicotine commonly used in e-liquids. Freebase nicotine is the traditional form that gives a firmer throat hit, which many smokers find familiar. Nicotine salts, often called nic salts, are smoother at higher strengths, which can make them feel less harsh on the throat while still providing a similar level of satisfaction.
Common nicotine strengths for regular vaping range from very low to relatively high. As a general guide, lighter smokers and social smokers might start with a lower strength, moderate daily smokers often choose a mid-range strength, and heavier smokers tend to need a higher level, at least to begin with. Over time, some people choose to reduce the strength as they feel ready.
Flavour is one of the biggest reasons people stick with vaping. At Touch of Vape, we see customers drawn to classic tobacco flavours that echo the taste of a cigarette, cool menthol blends, fruity options, dessert-style flavours, and liquids inspired by drinks. Trying a few different flavour categories can help you find something you actually enjoy using each day.
Vapes and e-liquids in the UK are regulated products. There are age restrictions, so they are for adults only. There are also limits on nicotine strength in standard e-liquids and on the capacity of tanks and pods. Products need to meet quality and labelling rules before they can legally be sold, which gives some reassurance compared with unregulated markets.
Basic safety is mostly about common sense and using products as intended. It is important to use the correct charger for your device and avoid leaving batteries charging unattended for long periods. Buying vapes and e-liquids from reputable UK retailers helps you avoid illegal or counterfeit products that might not meet the required standards.
Public health organisations in the UK, such as Public Health England and bodies that inform NHS guidance, generally describe vaping as less harmful than smoking for people who already smoke, because vaping removes tobacco burning from the equation. That does not make it risk free, and it is not something we suggest starting if you do not already smoke or vape. Vapes are intended for existing adult smokers and vapers, not for children, non-smokers or pregnant people.
When you are choosing a first vape, it helps to think about three things: how often you currently smoke, how much nicotine you might need to feel satisfied, and how simple you want your device to be. Someone smoking only occasionally may be happy with a low strength liquid and a very basic device, while a pack a day smoker is more likely to need a higher strength and a reliable MTL kit.
For many beginners, a small pod kit that feels similar to a cigarette in the hand and mouth is a sensible place to start. Some people prefer to test the water with a disposable or Dispod Kit first to see if they like vaping at all, then move quickly to a refillable pod kit for better long-term value. Others are comfortable going straight to a refillable kit from day one.
When you are weighing up different vapes, it can help to ask yourself a few quick questions:
• Do I want to charge it daily, or would I prefer a bigger battery?
• Am I comfortable filling a pod with liquid, or do I want pre-filled pods?
• Do I want something that feels like a cigarette, or am I happy with a slightly bigger device?
• Am I aiming for a discreet level of vapour, or do I like bigger clouds?
At Touch of Vape, our team in the UK spends a lot of time helping people work through those choices with clear explanations and beginner-friendly options.
