Quick Fixes When Your Vape Stops Working

Vape Not Working? Here Are the First Things to Check

When your vape suddenly stops working, it is usually annoying rather than the end of the world. Most of the time the problem is something simple, and with a few quick checks you can get back to a smooth vape in minutes. As a retailer that speaks to vapers every day, we see the same issues coming up again and again, and they are usually easy to sort.

Before we fix anything, it helps to know what type of vape you are using. Disposable vapes are single-use bars you throw away when empty, these have been relpaced by pre-filled pod kits since they were banned back in June 2025. Pod kits use replaceable pods or coils and are popular for nicotine salts. Full vape kits usually have a separate tank, replaceable coils and adjustable power. The type you have will decide what you can realistically fix and when it is time to replace. You should also stop straight away if your device gets very hot, hisses from the battery area or smells of burning plastic, because that can be unsafe and needs a new device, not a repair.

Fixing Power and Firing Problems

If your vape is not hitting at all, start with the basics. Check it is actually switched on, as many kits use a five-click on, five-click off button pattern. Some newer vapes have a child lock that needs a specific button combination before they will fire. If there is a fire button, press and hold it while inhaling, rather than just tapping it.

For rechargeable vapes, plug the device in and watch the LED. If nothing lights up, try a different USB cable and a different plug, and check the port for fluff or damage. A quick wipe of the charging contacts with a dry cotton bud can clear light dirt. Flashing lights often signal an error like low battery, short circuit or over time puff, and a short rest followed by a recharge can clear it.

With disposables and pre-filled pod kits, if you get no vapour, first check whether there is any flavour or warmth at all. A totally cold, flavourless pull usually means the vape is finished or the internal battery has died. A brand new device that never worked at all may be a dud. In that case, keep hold of it and the packaging and speak to the retailer you bought it from to see what they can do.

Sorting Burnt, Harsh or Weak Flavour

A burnt taste is one of the most common complaints when people say their vape not working properly. Inside your coil or pod is cotton that needs to stay saturated with e-liquid. If you puff very hard, chain-vape without a pause, or run too much power for a small coil, the cotton can dry out and singe, which gives that horrible burnt taste.

To fix vape flavour, start when you install a fresh coil or pod. Fill the tank or pod and let it sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes so the cotton can soak fully. Some vapers add a drop of e-liquid directly onto the cotton inside the coil before fitting it, which is called priming. If your kit has adjustable wattage, set it to the lower end of the recommended range and slowly increase until you find a sweet spot without harshness.

Weak vapour or muted flavour is often caused by low battery power, an old coil or too much or too little airflow. Try these checks: 

• Make sure the battery is at least half charged. 

• Close the airflow slightly if the draw is too airy and flavourless. 

• If the coil has been in use a long time, swap it for a new one. 

• If you hear gurgling, the coil may be flooded rather than burnt.

The PG/VG mix of your e-liquid also matters. Thicker, high VG liquids can struggle in small pod systems, while very thin high PG liquids can feel harsher in powerful sub-ohm kits. Matching the liquid to the style of vape can instantly improve performance.

Stopping Spitting, Gurgling and Leaks

If your vape spits hot droplets or gurgles, it usually means there is too much liquid around the coil. Overfilling the tank, inhaling very softly or storing the kit on its side can all let e-liquid flood into the air flow. Condensation inside the mouthpiece can also collect and eventually make its way into your mouth.

There are a few simple things you can try: 

• Remove the pod or tank and gently blow through the mouthpiece into a tissue. 

• Wipe inside the mouthpiece and air flow with a paper towel. 

• Remove and refit the coil or pod to make sure it is seated firmly. 

• Empty any excess liquid, then refill to the marked line instead of right to the top.

To reduce leaks longer term, keep your device upright when you are not using it, and avoid leaving it in hot cars or in direct sun where liquid can thin out and seep through seals. Pod kits and tanks use small rubber O-rings and seals that wear out with time, so if you notice constant leaking from the same spot, a fresh pod or replacement tank is often the cleanest fix.

Worst case scenario it could be as simple as a dodgy coil or pod through a manufacturig error, replace with a new coil or pod and see if that fixes the issue.

Solving Charging and Connection Issues

When a vape refuses to charge, look closely at the charging port and cable. Pocket lint or dust can build up inside the port and stop the USB plug from sitting properly. A wooden toothpick or dry cotton bud can gently free loose fluff. If the cable wiggles or only works at a certain angle, it might be the cable, not the device, so trying another one is worth a go.

If your pod or tank is not being recognised by the device, you may see an error flash or the fire button simply does nothing. This is often down to poor contact between the coil or pod and the body of the device. A small amount of e-liquid on the contacts can interrupt the connection. Remove the pod or coil and wipe the metal contact points on both sides with a dry tissue. Check for any pins that look pushed in or crooked.

There are times when it is not safe to keep trying. Stop immediately if the battery looks swollen, the body is cracked, or the device becomes hot while it is charging. In these cases, the safest option is to recycle it and replace the device rather than trying to fix vape issues that are linked to the battery.

A lot of random faults come from very cheap or unbranded vapes. Poor quality control can mean loose seals, weak batteries or inconsistent coils that burn out fast.
