Vaping in Leicester City Centre: the Key Rules
Vaping is not currently banned in outdoor public spaces in the UK, but individual venues, transport operators and landlords can and do set their own rules. Most Leicester city centre indoor venues prohibit vaping on the same basis as smoking. Most outdoor areas, parks, streets, open squares, are fine unless specifically signposted otherwise. Courtesy is as important as legality: moving away from entrances, not vaping near children and being aware of others in shared spaces keeps vaping pleasant for everyone and reduces the chance of complaints that could lead to more restrictive rules.

Victoria Park: the City's Best Open Space
Victoria Park is Leicester's most spacious city centre green area and the most obvious choice for a longer vape break. Its wide open grounds, tree-lined paths and benches make it comfortable for a walk-and-vape or a sit-down break, and the open space means vapour disperses immediately and is not a nuisance to others. It is particularly pleasant in the warmer months and is close enough to the city centre and university areas to be convenient for office workers and students. The park's size means you can always find a quieter corner away from families and children if you want to vape without feeling conspicuous.
Jubilee Square: Central and Convenient
Jubilee Square in the heart of the city centre is a large open public square that has become one of Leicester's main outdoor social spaces. It is pedestrianised, open and has seating. As a public outdoor space it is generally fine for vaping. The square is central, making it an easy choice for a quick break from shopping or work, and its open aspect means vapour does not hang around. As with all public spaces, be aware of families and children nearby and move away from entrance areas to nearby buildings.
Greyfriars and the Cathedral Quarter
The area around Leicester Cathedral and the Greyfriars site, where Richard III's remains were discovered, has several pleasant outdoor seating areas and quiet streets that make for a relaxed vape break. The cathedral grounds are peaceful and the surrounding streets have a mix of benches and low walls that serve as informal seating. The area has a quieter feel than the main shopping streets and tends to attract fewer crowds outside of tourist peak times.
New Walk: A Proper Promenade
New Walk is Leicester's celebrated tree-lined pedestrian promenade connecting the city centre to Victoria Park. It is one of the longest pedestrian streets in England and a genuinely pleasant walking route. Walking New Walk is a natural vape break opportunity, the wide, tree-lined path means plenty of personal space and the route is used by walkers, cyclists and joggers rather than primarily by families with young children. The distance and the pleasant surroundings make it a good option for a longer break.
The Market Area and St Martins Square
Leicester's historic market area, one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe, has surrounding streets and squares that offer outdoor seating and open air space for a vape break. St Martins Square in particular has an outdoor dining and drinking culture that includes outdoor seating where vaping alongside an outdoor drink is generally accepted. The market area is busy during trading hours so picking a quieter corner and being considerate of nearby diners and shoppers is important.
The Waterside Development
Leicester's Waterside development along the River Soar has created a new outdoor leisure area with riverside walks, seating and open space. It offers a more relaxed, spacious environment than the main city centre shopping areas and the riverside walk provides a natural route for a longer break. The development is still growing and quieter sections of the river path are excellent for a peaceful vape break away from the busiest parts of the city centre.

Move away from building entrances
Vapers standing directly outside shop, office and restaurant entrances create the strongest negative impression of vaping in public. Moving ten to fifteen metres from any entrance is a small step that makes a significant difference.

Be aware of children in your vicinity
In family areas, playgrounds, family sections of parks, areas with pushchairs, move to a more adult-oriented space before vaping. This is basic courtesy that most vapers practise without needing to be reminded.

Do not vape on public transport
Leicester's bus network, the Skylink services and any trains do not permit vaping. Vaping at bus stops on public land is technically permitted but practically inadvisable, it creates confrontations and reflects poorly on vaping culture generally.

Check venue policies when in doubt
If you are in an outdoor area attached to a venue, a beer garden, an outdoor dining area, check whether vaping is welcome. Many venues that permit smoking outdoors also permit vaping, but individual policies vary.
