Yes, and the NHS now actively recommends vaping as the most effective consumer cessation tool available. Here is the evidence behind that recommendation and how vaping works as a smoking reduction and cessation pathway.
Vaping is the most effective consumer nicotine product for helping smokers reduce or stop cigarette use. The evidence comes from multiple randomised controlled trials, most notably a 2019 New England Journal of Medicine trial funded by the NHS that found one-year abstinence rates of 18% for vapers compared to 9.9% for NRT users when both were combined with behavioural support. The NHS now explicitly recommends vaping as a cessation pathway for smokers. The reasons for vaping's effectiveness include its ability to replicate the sensory and behavioural aspects of smoking that NRT cannot, its variable nicotine delivery allowing gradual step-down, and the availability of flavours that make switching more sustainable than plain NRT products.
Cigarette addiction is not only about nicotine, it is also deeply conditioned to the physical ritual of the hand-to-mouth action, the inhalation, the exhalation, the breaks and the social contexts of smoking. NRT products like patches and gum replace nicotine but do nothing to address this behavioural component. Vaping replicates it closely. The physical ritual of vaping provides the conditioned cue responses with a familiar behaviour while removing the tobacco combustion. This is why vaping is more effective for many smokers than NRT even at equivalent nicotine doses.
Vaping's most significant pharmacological advantage as a cessation tool is the availability of products at multiple nicotine concentrations. A smoker can switch to an equivalent nicotine level, stabilise, then progressively reduce from 20mg to 10mg to 6mg to 3mg to zero over a period they control. This gradual reduction allows the brain's nicotine receptor density to normalise progressively rather than abruptly, producing significantly less severe withdrawal at each step. No other nicotine product offers this degree of user-controlled dose flexibility.
The pleasantness of vaping compared to cigarette taste is a significant factor in making the switch sustainable. Clinical research consistently shows that flavour availability is important for switching success, particularly for younger smokers who switched from cigarettes to vaping partly due to the more palatable flavour experience. Restrictions on flavours have been shown in some markets to reduce switching rates. The variety available in the UK market supports long-term switching sustainability.
The 2019 NEJM trial showing 18% vs 9.9% one-year quit rates for vaping versus NRT was a landmark study that moved vaping from a harm reduction adjunct to an evidence-based cessation recommendation. Subsequent studies and real-world evidence have broadly supported this finding. NHS guidance updated after this trial explicitly recommends vaping to smokers trying to quit. This is not industry-funded advocacy, it is NHS-funded trial evidence incorporated into national clinical guidance.
"The evidence on vaping and smoking cessation is genuinely strong now. When we help smokers switch, we know we are giving them the product with the best evidence base behind it."
Touch of Vape team, CoventryThe most common reason switching attempts fail is starting with the wrong setup, either a device that is too complicated, too weak or a nicotine strength that does not satisfy. Our Coventry team matches customers to the right combination every day.
The NHS trial showing 18% quit rates combined vaping with behavioural support. Vaping alone produces lower quit rates. NHS Stop Smoking services provide free support that meaningfully improves your chances.
Switching to vaping is step one. The goal is progressively reducing nicotine concentration over months until you are at zero. Starting with this plan in mind gives the switch a purpose and direction.
The first two to four weeks of switching involve adjustment, to the new nicotine delivery speed, the different sensations, the changed routine. Most people who persist past this adjustment period find the switch becomes natural.
Getting the right device and strength first time makes the difference between switching that sticks and one that does not.
