How to Fix a Burnt Vape Taste

Depends on the cause, burnt cotton cannot be reversed

A properly burnt wick needs replacing: but some burnt tastes can be resolved

In some cases, where the burnt taste is mild and caused by a temporary dry hit, the coil can sometimes recover with re-saturation. In others, where the cotton is actually burnt through, there is no way to reverse it and the coil needs replacing. Understanding which situation you are in determines whether fixing it is possible.

Diagnose first

Is Your Coil Recoverable or Does It Need Replacing?

MILD BURNT

Mild Burnt Taste: Possible Dry Hit Recovery

If the burnt taste appeared suddenly after heavy use or after the tank ran low, and it is mild rather than harsh and acrid, the cotton may have experienced a temporary dry hit. Stop vaping immediately. Refill the tank if it was running low. Wait fifteen to twenty minutes for the wick to re-saturate fully. Try a gentle draw. If the taste has improved, the coil may be recoverable. If the harsh burnt quality persists, the coil needs replacing.

PERSISTENT

Persistent Harsh Burnt Taste: Coil Is Done

If the taste is strongly burnt, acrid and unmistakeable, and does not improve with waiting and refilling, the cotton has been burned through. There is no way to remove burnt cotton residue. The only fix is to replace the coil with a new one that is properly primed before first use.

NEW COIL

Burnt Taste From a Brand New Coil

If the burnt taste appeared immediately on a new coil, the coil was not primed before first use. The cotton was dry when the heating element fired and immediately burned. The only solution is to replace the coil again and prime it correctly this time.

"Can you unburn a vape? Sometimes, if it was just a temporary dry hit. If the cotton is actually burnt, no, replace the coil. Five minutes of priming prevents it completely."

How to Prevent Your Vape Tasting Burnt

01

Always prime new coils before first use

Add drops to the wicking ports, fill the tank, wait ten minutes. This single step prevents burnt taste on new coils completely.

02

Never vape below minimum liquid level

Running the tank too low leaves the cotton exposed and produces dry hits. Refill before the tank gets below a quarter full.

03

Avoid chain vaping on very sweet liquids

High-sweetener liquids caramelise on the coil with heavy use and accelerate degradation. Short breaks between sessions extend coil life.

04

Reduce wattage if the taste is slightly off

A coil approaching end of life tastes slightly less clean before it tastes fully burnt. Reducing wattage extends the usable life while you prepare a replacement.
