How to Inhale a Vape Correctly

It depends on your device

Mouth-to-lung for pod devices and pens: direct-to-lung for sub-ohm kits

Vaping devices are designed for one of two inhalation styles. Mouth-to-lung (MTL) is the style used by most pod devices and starter kits, it feels similar to smoking a cigarette. Direct-to-lung (DTL) is used with sub-ohm and advanced devices, vapour goes straight to the lungs in one motion, producing larger clouds. Using the wrong technique produces a poor experience. Matching your technique to your device is the single most important thing a new vaper can do.

Mouth-to-lung technique

How to Inhale MTL (Mouth-to-Lung)

1

Draw vapour to the mouth

Pull vapour slowly and gently into your mouth, not your lungs. Hold it in your mouth for one to two seconds. The draw should feel slightly restricted, similar to a cigarette.

2

Inhale to the lungs

After holding the vapour in your mouth, inhale it down into your lungs in a separate, deliberate breath. This two-stage process is the defining characteristic of MTL inhalation.

3

Exhale slowly

Exhale the vapour slowly and evenly. If it is harsh or produces a cough, your nicotine strength may be too high or your liquid may have high PG content.

MTL suits: Pod systems, vape pens, all nic salt devices and starter kits. This is the correct technique for Bar Drop Nicotine Salts and any device with a restricted airflow draw.
Direct-to-lung technique

How to Inhale DTL (Direct-to-Lung)

1

Open your airflow fully

DTL devices have adjustable wide-open airflow. Ensure the airflow is at its most open setting before you draw.

2

Inhale directly to the lungs in one motion

Unlike MTL, there is no mouth-hold stage. Draw the vapour directly and continuously into your lungs in one smooth motion.

3

Exhale immediately

Exhale immediately after the inhale. DTL produces much larger vapour clouds and a warmer, denser experience than MTL.

DTL suits: Sub-ohm tanks, mesh coil kits and advanced devices with wide-open airflow. DTL is not suitable for nicotine salt liquids at 10mg or 20mg, the nicotine dose per puff is too high.
01

Use MTL for nic salts and pod devices

Bar Drop and all nic salt liquids are designed for MTL. Using DTL technique with a nic salt device delivers too much nicotine per puff.

02

Use DTL for sub-ohm and mesh coil tanks

DTL devices typically use lower-strength freebase liquids (3mg or 6mg) to compensate for the larger vapour volume per inhale.

03

Most new switchers start with MTL

The MTL technique feels most similar to smoking a cigarette, the natural starting point for switchers.
