Where Vaping Myths Come From

Vaping arrived as a genuinely new category. Regulators, journalists and health bodies were learning about it at the same time as consumers. Some early reports were inaccurate or based on research that did not reflect products available in the UK. Others were extrapolated from studies conducted in countries with different regulatory standards.

The result is a body of misinformation that has been remarkably persistent. We hear the same myths in our Coventry store from new customers every week, often repeated by people who genuinely want to make the right health decision. We respect that. Which is exactly why we take the time to address each one directly rather than dismiss the question.

Everything below is grounded in peer-reviewed research, NHS guidance or MHRA regulatory data. Where the evidence is genuinely unclear, we say so.

The myths and the facts

Seven Myths Our Coventry Team Hears Every Week

The Myth

"Vaping is just as bad for you as smoking cigarettes."

The Reality

This is the most common and most damaging myth we encounter. Public Health England concluded in a widely cited review that vaping is approximately 95% less harmful than smoking tobacco. While this figure has been debated and the long-term data is still developing, the broad scientific consensus is that vaping carries significantly lower health risks than combustible cigarettes. The key difference is the absence of combustion. When tobacco burns, it produces thousands of toxic and carcinogenic compounds. Vaping produces vapour not smoke and while it is not risk-free, the risk profile is substantially different.

The Myth

"Nicotine causes cancer."

The Reality

Nicotine is addictive but it is not classified as a carcinogen. Cancer risk from smoking comes primarily from the tar and toxic byproducts of combustion, not from nicotine itself. The NHS recommends nicotine replacement therapy, including nicotine-containing vapes, as a quit-smoking aid precisely because nicotine in isolation does not carry the cancer risks associated with smoking tobacco. This distinction matters enormously for people who are weighing up whether to switch.

The Myth

"E-cigarettes explode randomly and without warning."

The Reality

Battery incidents involving vapes do occur but they are almost always traceable to specific causes: using the wrong charger, charging with a damaged cable, using modified or counterfeit devices, or storing batteries incorrectly. MHRA-compliant devices sold by regulated UK retailers are subject to strict safety testing. In our Coventry store every product we sell meets UK regulatory standards. We always advise customers on safe charging practice because responsible use genuinely eliminates the vast majority of risk.

The Myth

"E-liquid contains antifreeze."

The Reality

This myth stems from a misunderstanding of propylene glycol, one of the main base ingredients in e-liquid. Propylene glycol is used in a wide range of food products, pharmaceutical preparations and cosmetics. It is entirely different from ethylene glycol, which is the toxic compound found in automotive antifreeze. UK-manufactured e-liquids are produced to food-grade standards and the ingredients are regulated under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations. The antifreeze comparison has no basis in the chemistry of compliant UK vape products.

The Myth

"Second-hand vapour is as dangerous as second-hand cigarette smoke."

The Reality

Second-hand cigarette smoke contains over 70 known carcinogens and lingers in rooms and on clothing for extended periods. Vapour dissipates significantly faster and contains far fewer toxic compounds. Research published in journals including Tobacco Control has found that the risk to bystanders from second-hand vapour is substantially lower than from cigarette smoke. This does not mean exhaled vapour is entirely without effect on bystanders and common courtesy applies in enclosed spaces. The comparison to cigarette smoke however is not supported by the evidence.

The Myth

"Vaping is unregulated and nobody checks what goes into e-liquids."

The Reality

The UK has some of the most comprehensive vaping regulations in the world. Under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations, all e-liquids sold in the UK must be notified to the MHRA before they can be sold. Ingredients lists are submitted, nicotine concentrations are capped at 20mg/ml and tank and cartridge volumes are restricted. Products must carry specific health warnings and child-resistant packaging. Every e-liquid we stock in our Coventry store has gone through this regulatory process. Unregulated products do exist on grey markets but that is a reason to buy from a trusted UK retailer rather than evidence that the category is inherently unregulated.

The Myth

"Once you start vaping you will never be able to quit."

The Reality

Nicotine dependence is real and we would not minimise it. Vaping is intended as a transitional tool, not a permanent destination, for the majority of people who use it to quit smoking. Many of our Coventry customers have successfully stepped down their nicotine strength over time, ultimately reaching nicotine-free options before stopping altogether. This is not universal and some people vape long-term, which is a choice we respect. The claim that vaping creates a uniquely inescapable dependency that exceeds that of cigarettes is not supported by the research.

Making the switch

What This Means If You're Thinking About Switching From Cigarettes

The myths above matter because they stop people from making a switch that could significantly improve their health. We see this directly in our Coventry store. Customers come in with concerns that turn out to be based entirely on misinformation and once those concerns are addressed they feel far more confident about trying vaping as a quit tool.

We want to be clear about what we are not saying. Vaping is not harm-free. It is not a medical treatment. We are not health professionals and this article is not medical advice. What we can say, based on the current evidence and the guidance of bodies like the NHS and Public Health England, is that for adult smokers who have been unable to quit using other methods, vaping is a significantly less harmful alternative worth considering.
